Our Lady was never far from Therese’s thoughts. She spoke of her frequently in her letters. To a missionary priest she wrote: “What a joy to remember that the Immaculate Virgin is our Mother! Since she loves us and knows our weakness, what have we to fear.” She always presented her petitions through Our Lady because, she said, “To ask through the Blessed Virgin is not the same as asking directly to God. She knows very well how to take care of my little desires.”
She also declared: “She has never failed to help me the moment I ask her. Wherever I’m uncertain or disturbed about anything, I instantly appeal to her and she comes to my assistance life the fondest of Mothers.” Four months before her death she wrote a poem, Why I Love Thee, Mary. Though it was not a great poetry, it was a moving expression of loving devotion to her.
