I thank You, Jesus, for Your divine words. Help me, Lord, to understand what You are speaking to me through Your precious words.
My dear beloved Lord, today I see a young man coming to You with all his goodwill, desiring to inherit eternal life. But, Lord, You told him that he lacked one thing. What was he lacking, Lord? You looked upon him and loved him, for You knew what he lacked. You told him to go and sell what he had, but he was not ready to do so. To inherit eternal life, one must be detached from everything. Lord, You detached Yourself from all things. That is why You said that those who wish to follow You must hate their father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, and even their own life. Again, You said, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head” (Luke 9:58).
Most loving Lord, when You told the man to sell all that he had, You also told him to give the money to the poor. Lord, why do You have such deep concern for the poor? I see that You were close to the downtrodden, the poor, the humble, and the sinner. Lord, You lived a life of poverty. Though You are the Son of God, You were born in a lowly manger and wrapped in swaddling clothes. This shows that You lived a poor and simple life. You also said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
Response
Most loving Jesus, You detached Yourself from everything. I, too, wish to be like You, detaching myself from worldly attachments.
In order to be like You:
- Today, when poor people come begging, I will give away things that are not necessary for me.
- I will make an extra effort to detach myself from attachments to both people and material possessions.
Dear Lord, I also see that You lived a life of poverty. I, too, want to be like You, living a simple and humble life.
Therefore, in order to be like You:
- I will be satisfied with what I have and give up unnecessary desires.
- I will be simple in my clothing, appearance, and lifestyle.
Resolution
I will be satisfied with what I have and give up unnecessary desires.
