“Mama I love you”. Every mother would be delighted to hear these words from her kids. In the same way our heavenly mother also is filled with joy when we, her children express our love for her. There are various ways in which we try to show our love and devotion to her. Some compose hymns in honour of her, some paint her images, and some write poems and so on. However, the best way to express our love for her would be by imitating her virtues.
We might have heard a lot about the virtues of our Blessed Mother. Have we ever thought of taking a particular virtue of her and imitating her in that area? Let us make an attempt to see the virtues that can be noticed in her at the wedding feast at Cana (Jn: 2:1-11). Let us reflect on each of these virtues and see where we stand with regard to our practices of those virtues. We shall also chose a virtue as we read and make a plan to put that into action in the coming days in honour of our Mother. We can choose a virtue that we need most at the moment and work upon it with her intercession and help. Such a desire to imitate her will make her immensely happy and take us closer to her.
1. Generosity
“On the third day there was a wedding and the mother of Jesus was there”
Our Blessed Mother was there. She was ready to be present wherever her help would be needed.
Do I offer myself willingly when I notice that someone is in need of my help?
2. Readiness to Help
“Jesus and his disciples were also being invited”
We do not read that Mary was invited. Yes, she did not wait for any invitation she knew who needed her help and went out to help.
When I see that someone is in need of help do I wait to be asked for help or do I go and help the person without even being asked?
3. Sacrifice
“When the wine gave out the mother of Jesus said to him, “they have no wine”
She was the first one to notice the lack of wine. It is possible only if she was involved in the serving of the wine. Instead of sitting down and enjoying she decided to serve when all the others were enjoying. She was on the look out to see who needed help.
Am I willing to sacrifice my personal time to serve the needs of others?
4. Interceding for Others
“They have no wine”
No one told her to go and inform Jesus. But she decided to intercede for with Jesus the family.
Do I spend time in interceding for the people we come into contact and for those who ask of our prayers?
5. Absolute Trust in the Lord
“Do whatever He tells you”
Jesus did not promise that he would turn the water into wine but she had absolute trust in the Lord, her son. So she just told the servants to do Just as Jesus would tell them.
Do we trust Jesus as she did? Are we able to take risky decisions placing our trust merely on the Lord?
“They filled the jars up to the brim”
The servants just obeyed Jesus when Mary told them to do so. They would have laughed at her if they did not know that her words could be trusted. She might have been known as a righteous person so the servants did not hesitate to obey her.
How are our dealings with our friends? Is it easy for people to trust us?
7. Respect for the Good Name of Others
“The steward did not know form where the wine came”
The steward who was supposed to have noticed the deficiency of wine was not aware of the whole affair. She knew that it was not her business to see to the supply of the wine but that of the steward. But she never said a word about him or blamed him. But she repaired the harm caused by his carelessness.
When we see that something is not done, how do we react? Do we blame the one who is supposed to do that work or do we take the pain of doing it silently without making it an issue?
8. Selfless Service
“Everyone serves the good wine first but the inferior one later”
The wine that was served first was inferior. Of course the quality of the wine resulted from the action of Jesus’ miracle would certainly be better. However, we can presume that the family was rather poor and was unable to provide drinks of superior quality.
This would mean that she could not expect much in return for the services rendered. But she was ready to help even when she knew that she would not be repaid.
Do we help others expecting something in return?
9. Humility
After the miracle we do not see her again in the scene. Probably many might not even have known her hand in the miracle. She, on her part, did not look for fame or glory but the good of that family.
What are our motives when we do a good action? Are we ready to help others without expecting even a word of thanks?
Do we see appreciation and acknowledgment when we do something that does not fall into our normal duties?
Dear Mother Help me to be like you.
Let my love for you not stop with mere admiration
but rather let me strive to imitate you as best as I can.
Help me to be like you in being available
to all those who need my help.
Help me to be on the look out to see
where I can be of some help.
Mother, help me to help
and not to seek for reward
Help me mother to be like you.
